Family[]

King Raul and Queen Lucia[]

Elena loved her parents very much and as the oldest child of the royal family, she was repeatedly mentored by both Raul and Lucia on how to be a ruler and bestowed the Scepter of Light and Amulet of Avalor. Their deaths greatly saddened Elena and she continues to remember and miss them fondly.

Part of her actions in the series is inspired by her parents. Elena took winning the Swordsman Tournament Cup seriously once she learned of Lord Elrod's cheating to defeat her and of him injuring her mother on purpose and dedicated the victory to her honor. Learning Shuriki is alive immediately made Elena desire to defeat her and avenge her parents. Coming into contact with her is enough to remind her of it until she finally kills her hated enemy once and for all, finally allowing Raul and Lucia to be avenged.

Raul and Lucia's spirits would appear and help Elena, they later comfort her over Esteben's betrayal as she wanted revenge on him for helping Shuriki. They tell her that her job is to protect the kingdom, not seek revenge. Revenge won't bring them back and will only lead to bad decisions. They even convince her to forgive Esteben.

Princess Isabel[]

Elena and Isabel were extremely close in their childhood and up to Elena's adulthood. They had a lot of fun together until Shuriki attacked Avalor and in order to protect her and the rest of their family, Elena bravely faced Shuriki to buy time for Alacazar to put them inside their painting. They were very happy when they were reunited.

However, ever since Elena became the Crown Princess, their relationship becomes slightly more complicated. At times, her royal duties force her to abandon Isabel and focus more on it, even once when she promised to help her, at which Isabel was furious and coldly told her to go away and gave her a cold shoulder when she came back. Despite this, Elena would always try her best to put Isabel above her royal duties and Isabel appreciates it, reconciling any strain between them. Elena can at times gain strength from seeing Isabel in danger, as shown with Shuriki and Orizaba, both which allowed her to neutralize the threats.

In Sister of Invention, Isabel joins the core team, adding knowledge and expertise on subject matters that the team would normally overlook. Elena appreciates Isabel for her help but also worries for her when she's in peril.

Francisco[]

Close to her grandfather, Elena also received lessons on how to be a leader from Francisco when she was young and she continues to do so as the Crown Princess. Although she may at times ignore his advice, he bores no ill-will and would gladly accept her apologies and continue to give her kind words of wisdom.

Luisa[]

As close to her grandmother as she is with her grandfather, Elena admires her sharp attention for details to the point of allowing her to be a member of the Council for it.

Chancellor Esteban[]

Due to having grown up together, Elena loved Esteban like a real brother. She even chose him as one of the members of the Grand Council since he has a great knowledge of the kingdom. However, the love she had towards him shatters as the whole family discovers his secret of having made a secret deal with Shuriki. This angers Elena to the point where she decides to exile him. In later episodes, Elena is still angry at Esteban about what he did to their family and kingdom and isn’t willing to forgive him at all, no matter how many times Esteban tells her that he has changed and would do anything to make things right between them. It wasn't until Elena learned from her parents the real truth about Esteban’s betrayal and how revenge would lead to bad decisions that she realized she was too hard on him. When Esteban sacrificed his own life to save Elena, she finally forgave her cousin. After her forgiveness undoes all the spells done by the Four Shades of Awesome, Esteban tells Elena that he will spend the rest of his life making up for what he has done. Elena happily accepts this and hugs Esteban, which makes them reconcile at last.

Friends and Allies[]

Naomi Turner[]

Elena and Naomi quickly became best friends after she helped save Isabel. Elena and Naomi are close due to being similar in age and Elena admires her honesty, common sense and resolve, earning her a seat on the Grand Council. Elena repeatedly defends her whenever Esteban shows disapproval of her actions as a member of the Council and trusts her immensely. They may have disputes but always come to a compromise at the end of the day, Elena greatly values Naomi's ideas.

In "The Last Laugh", Naomi leaves to find her own personal journey outside of her royal duties with a blessing, a new ship, from Elena. However, in Giant Steps, Naomi returns to Avalor and after helping Elena and the others on a mission, Naomi realizes that Avalor is where she belongs and tells Elena that she's back to stay, much to Elena's joy. After Elena is crowned Queen, her very first act is making Naomi her Royal Chancellor.

Mateo[]

Mateo is one of Princess Elena closest friends and is the Royal Wizard. He has shown interest in Elena out of friendship and respect for her as a ruler, but also subtle (unconfirmed) romantic notions found in numerous episodes. His crush is slightly one-sided as both are still on their path to their destinies; romance isn't an important subplot yet. But they have been spending a lot more time together due to having common trait, being magic users.

Gabe Núñez[]

Gabe is the captain of the Royal Guard. He is the brawns and strategic part of the team. He is a leader, thinking of the consequences and upholds his position to his relationship with the people around him when they're in battle. But around friends, he is goofy and fun. He and Elena don't have as much moments as comparison in the first season in the later seasons, but he is still someone Elena can relate to because she and Gabe are leaders in their own right. In some episodes, he does show some romantic interactions, and it was confirmed that he has a secret crush on her.

Skylar[]

Out of all the Jaquins, Elena's closest relationship is with Skylar. Skylar loves Elena very dearly and is always there for her when she needs him. He will do anything for her and never hesitates to help her when she's in trouble. Elena adores the feeling of freedom she gets from flying on Skylar and whenever they get the chance, the two of them like to spend time together soaring through the sky high above Avalor. Skylar and Elena have been on many adventures together and the bond between the two of them is one of the strongest bonds in the series. This is shown when Elena stands up for Skylar when he was chosen to be the next Navagera and when she helped him believe that he could rule over the Jaquins while his father was sick with a cold. In turn, Skylar helped Elena realize that she was more than her magic and vowed that when it was time for her big test, he would be right there to support her.

Princess Sofia[]

From the day Sofia became a princess and moved into the castle, Elena knew that Sofia was the one princess she had been waiting for who could free her from the Amulet. And from the moment Sofia first put the Amulet on, Elena began preparing Sofia for the task, granting her several special powers for when the time came. When at last she felt that Sofia was ready, she called her to the Secret Library where Sofia finally found out about Elena. After finally being freed from the Amulet, and her first failed attempt to take on Shuriki, Sofia tells her that she doesn't have to fight Shuriki alone. Together Elena and Sofia rescue both their families and reclaim Avalor back from Shuriki. Elena then lets Sofia keep the Amulet to thank her for everything she did. Although the two of them don't see each other often given the great distance between their respective kingdoms, Elena considers Sofia a true, lifelong friend and remains eternally grateful to her and her family for everything they did for her, her family, and her kingdom with the two of them writing each other letters to remain in touch. Given her time in the Amulet, it's likely that Elena knows Sofia better than anyone.

When the time comes for Elena to become Queen, she invites Sofia and her family back to Avalor for her Coronation since they were the ones who helped her get to this point in her life and is overjoyed to see them when they arrive. After Elena is crowned, she and Sofia dance together as the celebration begins.
