These Easy Boston Baked Beans are a simpler version of the traditional recipe. The homemade baked bean sauce poured over bacon and beans for the ultimate summer side dish.
My family loves barbecue and these EASY Boston Baked Beans.
My ultimate summer dinner would be our Smoked BBQ Ribs, Cornbread Muffins, Potato Salad and these Easy Boston Baked Beans.
I have always loved baked beans, but wanted to make some authentic Boston Baked Beans for an upcoming family barbecue.
It turns out, most beans recipes require you to soak your beans overnight and then reserve some of the bean water to use later in the recipe.
But with this recipe – no soaking of beans required. No reserving bean water.
This recipe calls for canned navy beans so the hardest part is opening the cans.
Where did this recipe originate?
Authentic Boston Baked Beans include a variety of beans that have been cooked in a sweet sauce made of molasses or maple syrup and are flavored with pork.
In the 18th Century, Boston was an exporter of rum, which is produced by the distillation of fermented molasses.
At the time, people began adding molasses to local baked bean recipes which then became known as Boston Baked Beans.
In colonial New England, baked beans were traditionally cooked overnight beginning on Saturday so that on Sunday, the beans were still hot and people could enjoy a hot meal and still comply with Sabbath restrictions.
I would say we hit the nail on the head! Our Easy Boston Baked Beans are cooked in a sweet, sticky sauce made of molasses and brown sugar that is poured over bacon covered navy beans.
It doesn’t get much better than that!

Can you do this in the Crock-Pot? If so for how long on hi or lo?
-

You could make these baked beans in the slow cooker. The cooking time will be longer. Watch them closely. Here is a link that will help you with the length of cooking time.https://www.ehow.com/info_7947443_slow-cooker-temperature-settings.html

-
Connie says:
Can we make this in the IP then brown bacon?
-
Momma Cyd says:
Sure! That will work too.

Katie says:
MUCH too salty. I’m making it with 1/4th the salt next time. I also recommend cutting bacon into 1/4ths before baking. It is hard to separate after. Good flavor

Alisa says:
I made them in a crock pot this weekend! (Made them in oven before also). Cooked on low for 4 hrs then took lid off for 1 hr. Turned out great
-
Heather Jones says:
Just wondering what kind of bacon is used is it plain or smoked, full back or streaky.
-
Momma Cyd says:
You can really use whatever bacon you like or have on hand. We love a good smoky bacon.
-
Debbie Ellwood says:
what kind of onion? yellow? sweet?
-
Momma Cyd says:
We used a yellow onion, but either will be delicious in these baked beans.
-
Debbie says:
Thank you for this recipe. I did it exactly how you said, and it turned out Amazing!
-
Amy says:
Can I half it? With this change the cooking time?
-
Momma Cyd says:
You can easily half the recipe. Cooking time may change slightly. You want your beans cooked and heated through and the bacon cooked.
-
Holly says:
How important is the dry mustard if I don’t have this ingredient?
-
Pamela says:
It is delicious, I didn’t measure exact on the ingredients due to I used dried navy beans that I soaked then cooked then used and I was short some, so other ingredients I eyed what I thought to adjust to amount of beans I had. I used jowls that baked (for about two hours due to less mentioned in recipe) perfect with the beans/ingredients.

Momma Cyd says:
It calls for 1/2 teaspoon, so you will probably be ok. But it does add flavor. Here is a fun link with ideas for substitutes for dry mustard. https://www.thepioneerwoman.com/food-cooking/cooking-tips-tutorials/g39227847/best-substitute-for-dry-mustard/
